Practice dialing 911 with your kids.

Practice makes perfect is what we always tell the kids. So practice a few things with them.

First, and practice this until you are satisfied, teach them to dial 911 if there’s a emergency. If it’s a fire they should run to a trusted neighbors house first then dial.

Get an old play phone to practice with, and take them through the whole call as if you were the operator. Even if your 911 service has automatic location, you still want them to practice the name, address, and phone number part because you might be somewhere that doesn’t have it when they call.

The second thing to practice is a fire drill. Teach them what to do if there is a fire and rehearse this a few times a year. Make sure they can operate anything in the path they are instructed to take. Door locks, baby gates, window locks, opening a window if it includes one. Their route must be do-able by them at all times, if that’s what they are to do. If they are too young then show them what to do until help arrives.

Take the kids up to your local fire department on a quiet Saturday evening in the summer, to see the trucks and let one of the firemen show them how they look if they are dressed with their breathing masks on. They will love it and they will know what to expect in a real rescue.

The fire men can also help you find information or help plan what everyone should do. But before you leave remember to thank them for all the hard and dangerous work they do. It’s not the pay they love, it’s the Job and the people they do it for. That’s why they do it.

Out with Religious laws and in with Security!

I do not care who you are or what religion you vow to participate in, if you want to fly out of any airport in America, than you better get used to going through the full body scanners and that will be that!! (Eventually!)

I won’t go because of this or I won’t get scanned because of that, or (and here’s the good one,)  I don’t want any strangers seeing my private parts! Well in this day and age, I will tell you what. The persons who’s job it is, to sit there and look for little details like batteries and wires, after seeing thousands of shadowy outlines of body parts every day, really doesn’t want to see your body parts (little details) either, and that’s a fact.

As a matter of fact they probably wish you would have stayed home and that no one flew, ever, so that they would not be made out to be the perverts they must be to have such an important security job like that. In essence, that is what you are doing to them! They are Trained professionals doing a job people! (What about all the different ethnic doctors who see real naked bodies and not just an image shown on a computer monitor! Oh Heaven Forbid!! Or Are they all perv’s also? Are all the people showing the doctor violating their religions too!!!)

You can damn well bet that if you were saying good bye to your family members and putting them on a plane destined for anywhere, that you want to be as sure as possible that no one on that plane was going to do something wrong! You are damn right you would like every form of screening to be used if it was your loved ones getting on that plane, now wouldn’t you!!!!!

So all I have to say is get over it for religious reasons or modesty reasons or any other reason for that matter. Each and every gosh darn person on that plane from nose to tail and that includes even the animals in the cargo hold, have someone in this world that loves them and want’s to see them home at the end of their trip. Even You!!! Mrs. I’m to modest or Mr. It’s against my religion.

So anyone who can go to a doctor, can go through the scanner also, religious beliefs or not. Cut the crap and just remember you got scanned for the safety of everyone else, just as everyone else did for your safety, so there! And by the way, I am sure that whoever anyone worships would definitely understand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And I will tell you another thing also; Trees, hills and valleys come in all different shapes and sizes too and whether or not you think you are special, there is probably a better one in the next forest!! Got ME!!! Understand what I mean!!! Than quit holding up the line already and go through the scanner, because I got a plane to catch and loved ones waiting at the other end!!!!!

P.S. How can anyone, confuse a portrayed image on a video screen as being the real thing? And if people have that bad of hangups, than simply put the person who is viewing the screen in a different room in back somewhere and they can just push a button or call on their radio if they see something alarming, so the officers out there with you can handle it. That way the one watching the screen never can see any person who’s image they saw on the screen. Simple Hugh!!!

And think of this, If the scanner screen had been placed out of sight of the public to begin with, than all of the fuss would have been a whole lot less over this issue. Remember, Outta Sight, Outta Mind,  just like your Little Details!!!

Facebook, My Space and Twitter are Cool but Watch your Privacy

We all love Facebook, My Space and Twitter, well maybe not all, but most generally do.

It’s really cool, for keeping up with old friends and family that live far away. You can find people from your past or present and that gives you a way to contact them. There is just one thing you have to remember. It doesn’t matter that you can block the information that is viewed by the public, because if you are on there and are friends with anyone, than they most likely have posted stuff that they know about you on their Facebook, My Space pages or Tweets.

If something big happens to you and you keep it private on your pages, you can reasonably bet that one of your friends who personally knows about it, will mention it on their pages.

I guess that’s OK unless someone undesirable like an Ex- , or an enemy, or baby’s daddy is looking for something on you. If any of those people know any of your Facebook or My Space friends, than that is an open door for them to find out about you through what your friends posted about you on their pages.

Privacy is something that is hard to protect now days. With a thousand friends on Facebook and My Space, some who contact you directly or daily, much of your life can be posted on many of your friends pages without you even knowing it.

So be careful with what you do online and how you do it. The World is Watching You.

Yahoo Answers but don’t always believe it.

I saw a recent article on the Yahoo home page about what to do if your cell phone gets wet. Upon reviewing all the answers, even their best choice was not correct.

It appears they are in the Q/A business to gain advertising space and not checking their answers with any professional staff at all who are qualified to give the correct answer.

That is one thing you must be able to discern while surfing the net, is the information you are viewing actually correct or not.

The best way to make sure the information you seek is actually the correct information, is to find it on a reputable site that deals with that kind of information alone.

For example, if you were seeking information on how to tell if you have Tonsillitis, don’t just take the first answer you find anywhere as being correct. You may be on a page that was written by a kid who had it and what they say may be wrong.

Simply think of the category your question is about and then search for sites that deal with that category alone. For Tonsillitis you would search for “medical references or directories” giving you WEB MD, it is there that you will find the correct answer to your question.

To find out how to replace a starter you would search “auto repair manuals online” and go from there. The trick is to first figure out what category your question belongs in and search that category and go from there. By doing so you will not run across as many wrong answers as you would by just searching “Tonsillitis” or “Starters”.

As for the wet cell phone, Putting it in a bowl of uncooked rice won’t hurt anything and it also won’t speed up the evaporation rate of the water in the phone. The rice does collect moisture that comes from the air but it does nothing more to help you.

First let’s look at how the professionals who fix these items do it on a daily basis. Electronic repair technicians first discharge any stored energy in the form of capacitors or batteries. All caps are discharged and all batteries are removed as soon as it comes in. They do this to prevent voltage from shorting to other components in the device and doing more damage.

So first, as soon as you get it out of the water, remove and dry off the battery and sim card the best you can with a soft cloth or towel.

Next the technicians actually wash their repairs in a soap mixture that cuts grease also. Then they rinse them with water.

Now they dry off all of the water they can by blowing low pressure compressed air all over it until it appears there is no more water left. So now take your phone and try to shake and blow out as much loose water as you can from any crack or opening on the device, until you cant shake or blow out any more. A can of Keyboard duster works well for the air to blow it out with.

Now the technicians place the device in a convection oven set to 100 degrees for 24 hours or longer to get rid of any remaining moisture without warping or melting any of the plastic.

You have to find warm dry heat to place your phone in, that isn’t hotter than the heat coming out of your furnace vent in the wintertime. Place it in front of the vent and keep rotating it a little at a time, and leave it there for days. The key to the device working again is to dry it out completely so it won’t short out inside and removing the battery quick enough before the electronics did short inside of it.

You should dry the sim card and battery in the same manner.

Once all is dry and patience is the key while waiting the couple of days for it to dry out, Insert the sim card and reattach the battery to the phone. If it didn’t short out before pulling the battery and it is completely dry inside, than you should be able to turn it on and start using it once again.

If it doesn’t work you could try drying it longer, but it probably is shorted inside so it’s time to have it replaced. I hope you got the accidental damage warranty when you got it.

Since electronics techs wash repairs of all kinds, all the time, this will work with most all of your electronic gear that may ever get wet. Water doesn’t hurt 99% of electronic parts now days. It’s the electrical shorting that happens when they first get wet or if you try to use them before they dry completely inside!

So remember this, the next time you leave your boom box or Ipod out in the rain, don’t throw it away, try to dry it out first, and if you dry it out completely it may be good as new.

HOT TIP; Water and electricity don’t mix so, if anything gets wet while it is plugged into the wall, make sure you turn off the breaker that puts power to the outlet it is plugged into, before you try to unplug it, or you could be severely hurt or killed if you don’t!!! If you are younger and don’t know what to do, don’t touch it and tell an adult immediately.

Free Reachout Wireless Government Assisted Cell Phone, for Low Income.

October 11, 2009 45 comments

It looks like another cell phone carrier, Nexus Communications Inc., has stepped up to the plate and is offering a government assisted cell phone, completely free to those who qualify.

www.reachoutwireless.com now is another place to go besides www.safelinkwireless.com, to get a free cell phone, charger and a free supply of minutes every month.

These phones are available to anyone who qualifies and the only catch is that no matter which one you choose to go with, you can only have one free phone per household. Even if you choose one carrier and someone else in the house qualifies and wants the other one, you are not allowed more than one free phone per household, no matter what plan you choose, so someone will have to pass.

An easy way to get around that, is to buy a minute phone (some are now as cheep as $9.95)  and split the costs with the person who has the free phone. If you use them only when needed and cut out the chatting, now two people can have reliable communication at an affordable rate, without any contracts.

To get your free phone Click on one of the following links. Then follow their instructions.  SIMPLE!

Now, here is a little stress reliever to ease your day.

Schools In. Remember The Children.

Go ahead and accidentally hit a child because you were disobeying school bus signals and your life will be changing drastically, if the parents don’t get a hold of you first.

Yes, summer is now over and the school year has begun. We owe all our kids who attend school the same vigilance that we use to get when we were the ones getting off the buses.

More and more people are starting to be seen trying to go by school buses and people, this is totally wrong. To think that some little boy or girl won’t be living out the rest of their life because someone was in a hurry to get to work, or home, or just to get anywhere is just plain unthinkable….

You are given the privilege of driving a motor vehicle because you are old enough to show that you can handle all of the responsibilities that go along with driving. You notice I said it is a privilege and not a right. That is because anything that can be taken away from you is actually just a privilege. Something you have a right to do will be kept with you through your lifetime and is to be expected. The only thing that can interfere with your rights is whether or not you are incarcerated for something.

So trust this: if you disregard school bus signals and endanger the lives of the children, than you will be on your way to loosing your privilege of driving. Now if you hurt one of the kids with your motor vehicle, you will no longer be the least bit concerned as to whether or not driving is actually your right or privilege, because you will loose it no matter what you think it is!

So come on America, lets be careful of the children of America so they can have a safe and fun school year. After all my friends, that is not their privilege – it is their right!!!

Pools. Summertime Safety Tip.

Hey, I’d be the first one to tell you that a nice relaxing dip in the pool after a rough day is nothing less than fantastic! That nice cool feeling of being surrounded by all that refreshing water is a feeling that the perfume manufacturers need to bottle up and sell.

That’s a million dollar idea. Now lets just remember one thing about that luxurious watering hole, it will attract kids like a magnet. Yes, even the sound of someone splashing about in a pool is enough to get curious kids interested enough to find the source.

Kids are drawn to it. So when some stray kid comes wandering around or maybe even your grandchild who just snuck out, while you were picking up the phone, goes wandering to the pool, you better make darn sure that there is no way they can get into it without an adults help.

Most states will prosecute if an accident happens. So let’s keep the summer fun and safe for all, by keeping our pools out of reach of the children.

For some good advice on this subject, just call your local pool supply store and discuss with them what needs to be done, to make your pool safe for everyone.

Kids, Pets, Elderly, Cars, and Summer.

It’s 104 in Phoenix, 99 in Lawton, 102 in Chicago, 98 in Detroit, 100 in Miami, 97 in Washington D.C. and 96 in Maine. Summer is upon us. So let’s rejoice and remember something very important to all.

Summertime is the all around best time to get out and do things with the family. Summer is a time for going places and doing things. But just doing your daily chores gets you out in the weather also.

In summertime weather we have to be extra careful as adults, that no child, pet or elderly person, be left in any car, at any time. Come on, we all have felt the heat roll out of a parked car when we open the door, after it was only parked for just a minute. That heat can lead to heatstroke and kill a senior, a child or an animal in no time.

Do not leave anyone in an unattended car, period, any time of year. It just isn’t safe. Also thinking that leaving the windows down or the air on, or thinking you will only be a few seconds is wrong. Motors can quit running, and a baby in a car seat with the windows down or the air on, can still overheat in the sun and die.

So plan all of your chores and outings alone and at specific times or bring someone along to help you take care of the kids, pets, and elderly. This way you never will have to leave anyone unattended in a car, period. By doing this, you may be saving the lives of the ones you love and not even know it.

Do it for them and for yourself, because doing the right things and being responsible, will always make you feel good about yourself and make you look good to others. Besides your precious cargo is counting on you!

Most states have tough laws about this issue, that include jail time and they were created to help save lives.

So have a Fun filled, Safe and Happy Summer and do your part.  Now, the Last one In, Is a Rotten Egg!

FREE Government Cell Phone by SAFELINK WIRELESS, for Low Income.

The government and Tracfone – (Safelink Wireless) have stepped up to the plate and hit a homer with this one.

You get a basic, free cell phone complete with a wall charger and they supply you with a certain amount of roll over minutes per month, every month, to use as you wish. All Free and No Contracts Involved.

You can also buy extra minutes on a phone card, sold at local convince stores, shopping centers and many gas stations to add more time to the phone if you ever run out, or want more time before the next month.

The qualifications and amount of minutes change by state. You can see if you qualify for the free phone and sign up at their site listed below.

It’s real easy to sign up and not to bad of a deal, considering that it doesn’t cost you a dime and provides you with your very own 24-7 cell phone to use as you need.

The only catch is you can only get one per household. If you have two people in the same house who need them, then one of you just go purchase a pay as you go phone for $19 bucks and pay for your own minutes or split the cost. This is a very affordable way to have phone service between two people who really can’t afford contract phones.

So get them, but use them sparingly, keeping down the chit chat and you will never be without a phone again. It’s a real help and money-saver.

I haven’t heard of a cutoff date for getting the phones or a date when the free usage will stop, so go to SAFELINK WIRELESS.COM and see if you qualify.

You can completely register by calling them at 1-800-SAFELINK, or on their site at one of the links provided here. It’s Free, Completely Confidential, And A Big Help To Anyone Who Is Having It Tough.

Thanks for this one TracFone and Uncle Sam.

Reachout Wireless has just come up with the free phone offer also.

To get your Free Phone, CLICK on one of the following links. Then follow their instructions. SIMPLE!

Now Here’s a HOT TIP – REMEMBER — YOU CAN ALWAYS DIAL 911 FREE FROM ANY CELL PHONE, WHETHER THE CONTRACT or MINUTES HAVE EXPIRED OR NOT. THE PHONE WILL ALWAYS DIAL 911 FREE, AS LONG AS IT IS CHARGED, IN WORKING CONDITION AND RECEIVING A SIGNAL.

Here’s a few more HOT TIPS -

Those old unused cell phones are perfect for older more responsible kids and teens who have been taught how to use 911. Let them carry one with them when they go out and you will feel a little more at ease while they are gone.

They are great to keep as a spare emergency phone in your vehicles, or to take when you are on vacation also.

Give them to visiting out-of-town relatives who don’t have a cell phone to carry during their stay, and they will never forget it.

Give one to an older relative who doesn’t want a cell phone. Explain to them that 911 is free and they can keep it charged at home for an extra phone to use in emergency’s or they can carry it with them when they go out and it won’t cost them a dime. It could save their life!

You can also donate them to charities and recyclers. There are even a few organizations that take used cell phones and in exchange provide our active duty service men and women with free phone cards to use as they want. These programs may be hard to find locally, but are definitely worth donating to. Search “used cell phone donations’ in your search engine to find one near you.

Now Here is a Little Stress Reliever to Ease your Day.

Children, How old is old enough?

I caught wind of a new thing going around, where you let your kids run and play outside today, the way kids used to do in the 60′s and 70′s, when we were raised. I have not read enough about this concept they are suggesting called “Free Range Kids”, to actually comment on their ideas of giving children the same running room that kids from “back in the day” were given, but I can comment from my own life and parenting experience.

I have lived in both days, then and now. So when I heard of parents raising the kids now, the way they used to be raised, it just scared the dittle out of me, to put it nicely.

I’ve raised my kids from the late 80′s to now and why anyone would think of acting the old way with their kids, is beyond me. Oh sure, there are parents that do let their kids have the freedom we had as kids and those kids come home just fine every night, no worse for the wear and grow up OK. Then there are others who have been sorry that they did. Living with the consequences for the rest of their lives, daily.

There are more parents now that are in the sorry category than ever before and it’s not because there are more kids. It’s because there are more people out there and more things that can happen to children, than ever before. Lets face it, the world is a much busier place than twenty or thirty years ago and more can and does happen.

We used to go out and the worst thing you would hear of, is a child being accidentally hit by a car, or some kind of an accident where the kid got hurt while playing without supervision, and that’s that. Nothing More.

The world was different then and it wasn’t neglectful to let your kids go out when they asked, not knowing where or who they would be with, or what they would be into. Life was a lot slower then, like the old TV shows depict and there were more concerned people, who did the right thing by looking out for kids, even if they weren’t theirs. That level of general concern, just isn’t there any more, like it used to be. Lets face it. We all know it’s true, because we rarely even know who our own neighbors are anymore. Back then, mom not only knew all the neighbors on the block, but most of the people in the neighborhood. People used to associate more and in fewer places, so most everyone knew of the others they should beware of. It was a built in safety net, that as kids we didn’t know was even there, but as parents we should realize, that the built in safety net longer exists in most communities in America.

Not only have the kids changed, but society has changed as well. Take a look at all the laws we have now regarding children and their safety. Most were developed for good reason and not just because of a few “bad eggs” either.

Sure, I believe in children having as much room to grow and to experiment with things as much as possible. Kids seem to experience things at their own pace back then and sometimes sooner than they should have. So did my kids have the right to know the feeling of having their first Red Rider BB gun like I did and have the right to shoot their eye out? No, and not because I didn’t want them to shoot their eye out, but the laws have changed in the cities and now it is illegal to discharge any gun, BB or otherwise, within the city limits. So they had to experience a different but similar event. That being when they were old enough by law and by my parental judgment, to learn about a gun, they were taught everything they need to know. Then they got the experience of dad taking them to the range, to shoot up some targets and not shoot up the neighbors garage like we did. We got spanked for that and you can’t do that now either.

Now there are more good reasons, why we should require our kids to be old enough, to do certain things. Things are a little different now and for good reason. Laws have changed, societies pace has changed, and people, even parents have changed and we have a lot of people and issues to deal with, beyond what’s best for everybody and not just the kids.

When children are old enough to handle anything they may come across, for their current age and when we as parents feel they are truly ready, then they will be allowed to live out the experiences we did, going by the parents determination of what they are ready for and not theirs and they will be safer because of it. That’s true parenting for the times we are living in now.

However, there still must be the diligence of the parent to set limitations, rules and boundaries that the kids will have to adhere to, which will be expanded as we feel they are ready, not them. We have to do this for their own safety. We now live in a society where you have to look out for yourself, because no one is looking out for you, and children are not always able to make the right choices, even when they have been taught. That issue has been proven by more local news stations, than you have sox.

I think that parents had a more open playing field when it came to raising kids back then, versus what parents have to take into consideration now days. They were great parents and were able to give the kids more freedom than we allow our kids today, but don’t despair. The kids of today will grow up in their own time, but at a rate that we as parents choose, that’s safe for our own children. They will still get to experience all of the things that we did, only in a different manner and time frame in their lives, that’s all. That’s not so bad now after all, is it. Wouldn’t it be better to err on the side of over protection, than to suffer on the side of under protection.

Bankruptnooption.

Now look at just one story from 27 years ago, that happened to the best of parents, then go give your kids Free Range, because It’s your choice for you to make for them, as a parent. Not theirs’.

HOUSEHOLD SAFETY TIPS FOR EVERYONE.

Home safety is a year around task for everyone. We will be creating a list to keep everyone safe in our homes that will be added to as time permits. Lets start out with these;
  1. ——-Do not run a generator inside your house, on any level, PERIOD. THE END. NEVER!
  2. ——-Do not run any appliance inside your home for heat, that wasn’t designed for the purpose of heating a room or a home.
  3. ——-If you must use a kerosene heater, use only the fuel recommended in the manual, and follow all the directions, including supplying proper ventilation. Don’t become a statistic. If you don’t know what to do then find someone that does!!!
  4. ——-Do you have smoke detectors? Put at least one on each floor and one outside every bedroom. Make sure that you test them regularly and replace the batteries in the fall when you set back your clocks.
  5. ——–You should have at least one carbon monoxide detector near the bedrooms and one on every floor if possible. Do the same with the batteries and testing.
  6. ——-Keep a fire extinguisher rated A-B-C on every level and in the kitchen and near the furnace. Follow the instructions for upkeep and testing. Replace them when they are used 1 time or if they are past the expiration Date on the extinguisher.
  7. ——-Use the proper extension cord for the job. Everything you plug in has an Amp or Watt rating on it. If it’s a Watt rating, then divide the Number of Watts by 120 to get the Number of Amps. Now buy an extension cord with an Amp rating higher than the Amp rating you found or calculated. Make sure that it is only as long as you need it and do not run it through doorways, under carpets, through windows, or across walkways. Remember to put them away when not being used.
  8. ——-Never use an extension cord near water without using a GFI outlet.
  9. ——-Remember to buy and keep an approved safety escape ladder easily accessible, near a second floor window. Show everyone how to use it and keep it ready.
  10. ——-Always keep the ground below windows clear of anything, in case you have to jump as a last resort. Most anyone will survive a two story jump, landing on your feet, if you don’t land on your head or something hard. You may get busted up pretty bad, but at least you won’t be overcome by smoke and flames and die in the fire.
  11. ——-Never use a plug adapter to go from three to two prongs, unless the adapter is grounded and properly installed.
  12. ——-Never use an electrical tool or appliance outdoors or near water, without plugging it into a ground fault protected outlet. If you aren’t sure what type of outlet it is, than ask someone who knows.
  13. ——-Make sure that you have a ground fault protected outlet at every outlet location near a sink or tub. These outlets can save your life one day!
  14. ——-Never keep any flammable items near anything that uses fire or flame. Furnaces, hot water tanks, stoves, ovens and space heaters are all good examples of areas to keep clear of flammable objects.
  15. ——-Also do not keep flammable or explosive liquids near any of these locations either, or on the same floor with any of these. If they were to leak the fumes could cause an explosion.
  16. ——-Don’t use adapters so you can plug in more cords to an outlet. If you have this problem, visit a home center electrical department and they should be able to guide you in the right direction. Write down all of the amps or watts of the things you want to plug in before you go, so they can help you.
  17. ——-Are all windows and doors in working order? Does everyone big enough know how to open them. They have to open if you need to get out in a fire. Don’t forget about the children. Do they have someone that is responsible to get them out? And does everyone in the house know who is to be responsible for who? Remember to pick a meeting place outside, so you can do a count to see if everyone has gotten out safely!
  18. ——-Never leave a 5 gallon plastic bucket alone with any liquid in it. Especially if there are toddlers around. They can tip in head first and drown!
  19. ——-All chemicals, cleaning supplies, medicines, or anything that is dangerous to consume, should be kept locked up and out of reach of children. Sprays, insecticides, or even toothpaste and baby powder, If it’s not o.k. for them to eat then put it up or lock it up in a clean dry place, case closed. Remember to keep them in their original containers also.
  20. ——-Baby and kid proof your house. Matches, knives, lighters, scissors, sewing kits, etc,. Again if it isn’t for kids to touch then put it up or lock it up. It is as easy as that.
  21. ——-Baby gates, plug protectors, cabinet locks, door and stove knob covers, and the list goes on. Buy them and use them. So you won’t regret it later.
——- That was just a good starter. We will add more as time permits. Print out this list and check each item that passes. Do it for you, but most of all do it for them!
