Childrens Songs to Each other, When did they grow up?

Does anyone in America or in other countries remember when kids would go to their friends houses and instead of knocking they would sing out the first name of their friend who lived there.

Did anyone else do this as kids or was this just something some wacky parent started in the neighborhood and all the kids picked it up and did it? I don’t know how far back this dates to, but the years that it was done was during the early 1960’s.

The area was the Southeastern area of Michigan. I don’t know if this was just a quick little passing fad or what, but when I hear someone knock at the door and it’s a child looking for their friend, it makes me wonder what happened to it and why did it die.

The only reason I can see, is what many people seem to say about kids now days. I know we have all either said or heard someone say, that kids are growing up to fast these days and I think it gets said towards every new generation of kids that grow up.

Such a wonderful and pleasant way to get a friends attention when arriving at their house would seem silly for an adult to do, but to hear children calling their friends was a constant reminder and brought back happy thoughts of days gone by. Playing hard with your friends all day until the street lights came on. Then bath, bed and another action packed day to follow. Why would children drop this form or calling someone out to play and adapt to the form that adults use, knocking?

I guess that this is one of those questions for the scholars, as to why society and groups of people change their actions over decades, but they do. It’s just a crying shame that things like these will eventually die away, never to be thought of again, ever. Things like these should be documented and put in historic journals of some type, so that future historians could look back at unusual things from the past. Even something that small deserves its place in history.

So for now I guess that one mans blog will have to be the official record of such things, and that’s what we will do in the new topic, REMINISCING. THINGS ALMOST FORGOTTEN.

One last thing, do children still care when the street lights come on or should someone blog about that also. And what about flashlight tag hey.
